Chapter Eight

“Aliens?” echoed Sherman, his mouth falling open.

“Aliens?” repeated General Cunningham, his face locked in a superior sneer. Most of the crowd held an expression somewhere between the two men.

“Yes, alien aggressors from above,” shouted Will. “Who else would have the ability to destroy the moon? Do you think we could do it? Of course not!”

A muttering went round the crowd as people thought about the question. A few cries went up, some shouting “rubbish” while others wanted more information.

“Will, this is not a good idea; these people are not ready for the truth,” murmured Ethan.

“I will not see you unjustly arrested,” said Will passionately. “You have done everything you can to help and protect us, and you’re being treated as a criminal by these idiots.” He pointed directly at Sherman and the general, who both flushed at the contempt in Will’s voice.

“Mind your words, boy, or you will be arrested as an accessory,” snapped the general.

“An accessory to what?” demanded Karen hotly. “You have no idea what is going on, and so you use your rank and your social privilege to bully anyone you can!”

A small roar of approval went round the crowd.

“I never had you marked as a radical,” whispered Will in surprise.

“I’m not,” blushed Karen, “but even I can see how unfair he’s being, and that he is misusing his authority.”

“Men, to me,” shouted General Cunningham in alarm, fearing that he was alone in a mob of working-class thugs and ruffians who would destroy the natural order of God and replace it with some sort of socialist egalitarian society. He shuddered at the thought. “Arrest that man and shoot down any who try and stop you,” he commanded to his troops, feeling braver that he now had his squad at hand.

“Shoot us?” echoed several voices. “For what?”

“For, for,” stuttered Cunningham before realising that legally he was on shaky ground. “For insurrection and treason,” he said finally. After all, the crowds were working class and not agreeing with him, so they were therefore being treasonous. “Take that man away.”

“Yes, sir, right away, sir, where to, sir?” asked the sergeant of the squad.

“What?”

“Where should we take him to, sir? We are rather far from the barracks, after all.”

“Oh, yes, um,” said the general, looking around in confusion.

“Perhaps the pub, sir?” offered the sergeant. “What’s left of it looks solid, and we can wait for a carriage for the prisoners inside.”

“Yes, we will do that. To the pub, I say,” said Cunningham in relief, glad he had found a solution. “Make way there, make way, for king and country!”

“We’ve got a queen, not a king,” shouted someone in the crowd.”

“Yeah, and I bet she’d be disgusted at the way you’re acting,” said another.

“Nah, she’s one of them, toffs is all the same,” replied another. “We’ve nearly been killed and they don’t care about us! They never care about us!”

“Yeah, bleeding parasites, the lot of them,” shouted a few more voices.

The general followed his men yet somehow contrived to get to the front of the small group by the time they got to the pub.
